Waves at Culs Nus, Hossegor

// Hossegor · LandesCuls Nus

Well north of Hossegor's central beach, away from the heart of the resort.

// The name

No dressing it up: the beach takes its name from the naturist practice allowed here since the 1960s. In practice, it stays mixed, textile and naturist crowds share the sand without any issue. Coming out of the water after a session and finding yourself face to face with a few naked bodies can catch you off guard the first time, but it quickly becomes a non-event once you're used to it.

// The spot

Well north of Hossegor's central beach, away from the heart of the resort. In winter, it can turn into a committing spot, with swells that hit hard. In summer, like on most of the coast, it stays largely accessible to all levels depending on the day.

Pro tour stops were often held here in the past, today it's the Quiksilver Festival that runs its own competitions on this beach.

A beach break exposed to north-west swells, which prefers a medium to long period, ideally around 11-12 seconds. Best wind: east/south-east, for clean waves rather than choppy ones. The best conditions usually show up on a rising tide.

// Did you know?

Even Kelly Slater had a scare here: in 2011, on a big day, he got held under by two waves back to back, an episode he himself described as the closest he ever came to drowning in his whole career. In the early 2010s, when La Gravière wasn't holding enough swell, Culs Nus became the fallback venue for the Quiksilver Pro France for a few editions, hollow, fast tubes were very much part of it.
