VVF/Océanides beach, Capbreton

// Capbreton · LandesVVF/Océanides

One of the wildest beaches in Capbreton, right at the southern end of town.

// The name

Officially plage des Océanides. Long known as "le VVF", after the holiday centre (Village Vacances Familles) right behind it. But that name is fading out, more and more people, especially recent arrivals on the coast, just say "les Océ" now. More a generational thing than a hard rule.

// The spot

One of the wildest beaches in Capbreton, right before La Pointe further south. Heading south from the harbour, the waves gradually build back up in power as you move away from the shelter of the Gouf de Capbreton. The Santocha and La Piste already have some punch, but it's at the Océanides that the Atlantic swell gets its full original strength back, with nothing left to soften it. Waves are generally short and hollow, reserved for experienced surfers. The spot favours periods around 9-10 seconds, though it can occasionally throw up great surprises with a longer period, around 12 seconds. Watch out, the water isn't always very deep, and every year surfers get hurt hitting the bottom.

About a hundred metres south of the beach entrance sits another peak, known locally as the CCAS. Le Soweto, a small beach hut at the top of the Océanides/VVF dune, livens up summer sunsets with concerts and drinks.
