Seignosse's best-known beach, right on the Hossegor border. Around here, everyone just calls it "les Esta".
// The name
Estagnots comes from the Gascon estanh, meaning pond. A common place-name pattern in the Landes, used for sites that were once marshy, poorly drained. Before the coastline was developed, the area likely looked more like wetland than the fine sand beach we know today.
// The spot
Exposed beach break, bordering Hossegor. Works year-round, at pretty much any tide, depending on the banks and the year. Best conditions: west swell combined with an east wind. There's a bit of a Californian feel to the place, which locals sum up with an affectionate nickname: welcome to Landifornia.
With a small swell and a well-shaped bank, it's perfect for longboarding. Outside summer, once the swell tops 1.5m, barrel peaks tend to show up around low tide. That can happen in summer too, but you'll more often find long, turny waves rather than barrels.
From June to September, the waves stay accessible to less experienced surfers. From September to March, it gets more consistent, the baïnes get stronger, and it's better left to those who already have experience. When conditions are good, it fills up fast, worth watching out for your own safety and everyone else's.
Kitesurfing is also allowed on this beach, one of the few in the area. And the peaks are now shared with the Seignosse coastal rescue club, based right next to it on the car park.
// Did you know?
From 1965 to 1984, the headquarters of the French Surfing Federation was based in Seignosse, near the roundabout that today borders the Estagnots beach. One of the founding places of organised surfing in France, alongside Biarritz and Hossegor.
// Who it's for
Ugo Surf Coaching has its hut set up right on the beach, open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. An itinerant school founded by Ugo, a former high-level surfer turned certified instructor, who moves to wherever the sandbanks are best. Regular lessons, video coaching to progress faster, gear rental on site.
Board Garage delivers straight to the spot, no shop, no detour, boards shaped by local craftsmen. On conditions that can get serious fast, it's better to already know which board you want before you arrive.
